A prime minister is a very important leader in a government.

They are often called the head of government. This means they lead the daily work of running a country. Most prime ministers lead a group called a cabinet. This cabinet is made up of other ministers who help with different jobs. In many systems, the prime minister picks these members. They can also dismiss them if needed. The prime minister is different from the head of state. The head of state might be a king, a queen, or a president.

In many places, the head of state has a ceremonial role. This means they represent the country at special events.

How a prime minister works depends on the type of government. In a parliamentary system, the prime minister is often the most powerful politician. They lead because they have the support of the legislature. The legislature is the group of people who make laws. In some systems, like in South Korea, the job is different. There, the prime minister is a senior member of the cabinet. They act like a vice president and take over if the president is away. In other places, like France, the prime minister helps the president. They manage the civil service and carry out the leader's orders. This helps the government run smoothly every day.

This type of leadership has a very long history.

Many different cultures had leaders like this long ago. In ancient China, they were called Grand Chancellors starting in 685 BCE. In the Ottoman Empire, the top leader was called a Grand Vizier. These leaders were the most powerful people after the sultan. In ancient Rome, the title was linked to the head of a chancellery. In the Holy Roman Empire, an Archchancellor held a high position. In the past, these leaders served at the will of a monarch. If a king lost favor with a minister, they could be fired. Sometimes, a king even punished leaders who lost their favor.

In England, the modern role of prime minister grew over many years.

After the death of Queen Anne in 1714, things changed. King George I spoke very little English. He also spent much of his time in his home in Hanover. Because of this, his first minister had to lead the government. Robert Walpole held this role for twenty-one years starting in 1721. He was the first to really lead the cabinet and its meetings. Later, William Pitt the Younger also held power for a long time. The title "prime minister" finally appeared on official documents during Benjamin Disraeli's time. It became a formal part of the British order in 1905.

Today, many different countries use this system to lead their people.

You can find prime ministers in many monarchies like Japan and Norway. You can also find them in parliamentary republics like India and Italy. Some countries use different names for the same job. They might use the words premier, chancellor, or first minister. Some places, like the United States, do not have prime ministers. Instead, they use a presidential system where one person holds both roles.
