Present

physical science Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The present is the time happening right now. It is different from the past. The past is time that already happened. It is also different from the future. The future is time that has not happened yet.

In science, the present is tricky. Albert Einstein studied how time works. He found that people see time differently. This happens if people are moving at different speeds. He said the split between past, present, and future might be an illusion. This means it might not be a real thing.

Some religions have ideas about the present too. Buddhism teaches people to live in the moment. This means being aware of what is happening now. It helps people feel happy. Christianity says God is outside of time. A thinker named Thomas Aquinas used a story to explain this. He said God is like a watchman on a high hill. The watchman can see the whole road at once. He sees the past, present, and future all at once.

In our big universe, we are in a special time. It is called the Stelliferous Era. This is a time when many stars exist.
