Sometimes, a solid forms inside a liquid. This is called precipitation.

This happens when a liquid has too much of something dissolved in it. This state is called supersaturation. It can happen if the temperature changes. It can also happen if the liquid dries out. When this occurs, the extra material turns into a solid. We call this solid a precipitate.

To make a precipitate, you can add a special chemical. This chemical is called a precipitant. For example, adding silver nitrate to a liquid can make a white solid.

Scientists use this to study different things. They use it to find out how much of a substance is in a liquid. This is called gravimetric analysis. It also helps clean up dangerous waste. In biology, it can help separate things like DNA.

Sometimes, the solid stays floating in the liquid. This forms a colloid. You can make the solid settle faster using a machine. This machine is called a centrifuge. It spins the liquid very fast to create a compact mass. This mass is often called a pellet.
