Precipitation (chemistry)

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Precipitation is a way to make solids from liquids. This happens in an aqueous solution, which is a liquid like water. When a solid forms and sinks, it is called a precipitate.

The liquid that stays on top is called the supernate. To make this happen, scientists often add a precipitant. This is a chemical reagent that causes the solid to form. It is a very useful way to separate things in science.

This process works when a solution becomes supersaturated. This means the liquid has more material in it than it can normally hold. This can happen if the temperature changes or if the liquid evaporates. When the liquid cannot hold the extra material, the solid falls out.

Sometimes, the particles are too small to sink on their own. These tiny particles stay floating and form a colloid. You can use a high speed centrifuge to make them settle. This machine spins them into a compact mass called a pellet.

Scientists have used these methods for a long time. In the past, people called certain powders "flowers." They were named this because of how they looked after forming.

One famous way to see this is with silver chloride. If you add silver nitrate to potassium chloride, a white solid appears. This is a classic example of a chemical reaction in a lab. It helps researchers see exactly what is inside a liquid.

There are many important uses for precipitation today. In chemistry, it helps with gravimetric analysis to find out how much of an ion is present. For example, hexachloroplatinic acid can help find potassium.

In industry, adding lime or caustic soda helps make metal hydroxides. It is even used to clean up radioactive waste. It can remove dangerous things like 137Cs from the environment. This keeps the world much safer.

Precipitation also happens in biology and metal making. Scientists can use it to separate DNA or proteins. They might change the liquid or add ethanol to make the DNA precipitate.

In metallurgy, it can make metal alloys much stronger. However, it can also make some metals brittle. This is important when working with nuclear fuel. Engineers must watch the temperature and pressure very carefully to keep everything safe.
