Many states and places like Puerto Rico play it. The game was first called Lotto America. In 1992, the name changed to Powerball. This game was the first to use two drums to pick numbers. This way helps people win many different prizes. One person in California even won $2.04 billion in 2022!

To play, you pick five white balls and one red Powerball. Each play costs two dollars. You can also pay an extra dollar for Power Play. This helps you win more money if you do not win the big jackpot. Winners can take their prize in two ways. They can take a lump sum of cash all at once. Or, they can take an annuity. An annuity pays money in 30 parts over 29 years. The amount of money goes up by 5% each year. The drawings happen three times every week. They take place in Tallahassee, Florida.
