A power loom is a machine that weaves cloth.

It uses mechanical power to move threads. This is much faster than weaving by hand. Edmund Cartwright began this work with a patent in 1785.

Weaving happens in a few steps. First is shedding. The machine lifts some threads to make a gap. This gap is called a shed.

Next is picking. A small part called a shuttle flies through the gap. It carries the filling yarn across the loom. Then comes battening. A frame called a reed looks like a comb. It pushes the new thread tight against the cloth.

Finally, the machine uses taking-up to roll the cloth onto a beam.

A person called a weaver watches the machines. They may watch ten to thirty looms at once. They feel the fabric to find broken threads. If a thread breaks, they fix it quickly. In 1894, James Northrop made a new loom. It could change its own thread without stopping. This helped weavers manage even more machines at once.
