Positivism is a way of thinking about knowledge.

Auguste Comte

It says true knowledge comes from facts. We find these facts by using our senses. We can see, touch, or hear them. This idea was made famous by Auguste Comte. He lived in the 1800s.

Comte thought society follows scientific laws. He believed people go through three stages.

The first stage is the theological stage. In this stage, people believe in gods. The second stage is the metaphysical stage. Here, people focus on rights and logic. The last stage is the positive stage. This is the scientific stage. In this stage, people use science to understand the world.

Comte's ideas helped start the study of sociology. This is the study of how people live in groups. Other thinkers like Émile Durkheim used his methods.

Positivism even helped shape Brazil. The motto in Brazil uses words from this idea. These words are "Order and Progress." People still talk about these ideas today.
