The Populus genus includes many different types of flowering plants.

These trees are found mostly in the Northern Hemisphere. You might know them by names like aspen, cottonwood, or poplar.

There are about 57 accepted species in this group. Some trees grow very tall with huge trunks. Others have smooth white bark when they are young. As they get older, some species develop rough, deeply fissured bark. These trees are very important for many living things in nature.

Many poplars have a very interesting way of moving. Some species have leaves with flat stems called petioles.

When a breeze blows, these flat stems let the leaves wobble. This movement makes the whole tree look like it is twinkling. In the autumn, these leaves often turn bright gold or yellow. The trees also have a special way to make more trees. They grow flowers called catkins in the early spring.

These flowers use the wind to spread pollen. Later, tiny seeds grow with soft, white hairs. The wind catches these hairs to carry the seeds away.

Scientists have studied these trees for a long time.

In 2006, the western balsam poplar was a very special tree. It was the first tree to have its full DNA code determined. This was done using a method called DNA sequencing. Researchers also look at fossils to learn about the past. They found fossils of a tree called Populus wilmattae in North America. These fossils are from about 58 million years ago. Other fossils from the Cretaceous period have been found in China and Tibet.

Poplars are used by people for many different jobs.

The wood is light and has a close grain. This makes it good for making paper or plywood. In India, farmers in the Punjab region grow them for business. They use varieties like G48 or w22. In Pakistan, farmers also grow them, but termites can sometimes attack the logs. Some people even use these logs as bait in termite traps.

In Europe and Asia, people grow them as ornamental trees because they grow so fast.

These trees connect to many things you see every day.

For example, some poplars can form huge colonies from one tree. A famous group called Pando is made of thousands of clones. This means they are all part of one giant living system. You might also see poplar wood used in musical instruments. Some cheaper guitars are made using hybrid poplar wood. Even the sap under the bark can be eaten by humans. Whether in a forest or a park, poplars are a big part of our world.
