Populism

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Populism is a word used to describe many different political ideas. It often focuses on the needs of the "common people." These groups usually stand in opposition to a group called the "elite." The elite are seen as powerful leaders who do not listen to others. Because of this, the term can be hard to define clearly. Many scholars say the word is used in many different ways. It can be a way to describe a movement or a way to criticize a leader.

One way to understand populism is through an idea called the ideational approach. This approach says populism splits society into two opposing sides. One side is described as "the pure people" who are seen as good and unified. The other side is described as "the corrupt elite" who are seen as dishonest. This view sees politics as a way to show the "general will" of the people. This means the people's shared wishes should guide the whole country. Some people believe this helps give power back to regular citizens. Others worry it can lead to unfair treatment of smaller groups.

History shows that the term has moved through many different places. The word first appeared in English in 1858. In the 1860s and 1870s, it was used by a group in Russia called the narodniki. This was a movement that wanted to help peasant farmers. In the United States, the People's Party used the term between the 1880s and early 1900s. They fought for small farmers and better ways to get money. In France, the word was even used for a type of novel. These books told stories about the lives of lower-class people.

In the mid-1900s, the meaning of the word began to change again. In the 1950s, experts in the United States and Brazil started studying it. Edward Shils wrote about anti-elite trends in the United States in 1954. At the same time, Hélio Jaguaribe wrote about it in Brazil. In Latin America, the term was often used for leaders who spoke to people in new cities. This was a time when many people were moving from farms to cities. By the 1960s, more researchers were writing about these political changes. Even so, experts could not agree on one single definition.

Recently, the word has become much more famous around the world. It gained huge attention after the big political events of 2016. These events included the election of Donald Trump and the UK's vote to leave the European Union. Because people talked about it so much, the Cambridge Dictionary named it Word of the Year in 2017. The number of academic papers about populism has also grown very fast. In 2017, there were 488 papers written about it. By 2018, that number rose to 615 papers. Today, people still debate if the term is helpful or confusing.
