The word has many meanings. In the 1800s, it was used in Russia. There, it was a movement for farmers. In the United States, the People's Party used it. They helped small farmers get better credit. In France, it was a type of book. These books told stories about poor people.

Later, the term moved to Latin America. Leaders used it to reach people in new cities. In the 1950s, experts began to study it more. Some scholars think it is a way to divide society. They say it splits the world into two sides. One side is "the pure people." The other side is "the corrupt elite."

Today, many people talk about populism. It became very famous after the year 2016. The Cambridge Dictionary even named it Word of the Year in 2017. Some people think it helps democracy. Others worry it can be a threat to it.
