They are famous for being able to learn quickly from people. Most experts believe these dogs first came from Germany. The German name for them is "Pudel." This name comes from a word that means "to splash."

This name fits because they were originally water dogs. They helped hunters find birds in the water. They even helped find lost arrows and bolts.

There are four different sizes of Poodles. These are the Standard, Medium, Miniature, and Toy Poodles.

The Standard Poodle is the largest of them all. The Toy Poodle is the smallest size. Some clubs do not recognize the Medium Poodle. This size is halfway between the Standard and the Miniature. Smaller dogs often live longer than the bigger ones. Most Poodles live between 10 and 18 years.

History shows that Poodles have done many jobs. Large Poodles were used for hunting in the past. Smaller Poodles were very popular in circuses. In France, they were bred to be small for the circus. They could perform magic tricks or walk on tightropes.

Poodles have also worked with the military since the 1600s. They are smart enough to ignore the sound of gunfire. One famous hunting Poodle even rode on a horse during a war.

Poodles have thick and curly hair. This hair comes in many colors like black, white, and red.

Many people show Poodles in dog shows. They often wear a style called a Continental clip. This clip leaves tufts of hair on the legs and tail. Long ago, this helped them swim without the hair getting too heavy. Some people think Poodles are hypoallergenic. This means they might release less hair and dander into the air.

These dogs became very popular pets in the last century. In the United States, they became famous after 1935. This was when a Poodle won a big prize at Westminster. From 1960 to 1982, they were the most registered breed in the AKC. Today, they are still very common in dog shows. They are also great at being service dogs for people. They are known for being very friendly and sociable.
