It is the second most common plastic in the world. Scientists make it using a way called polymerization.

This means they join small bits called monomers together into long chains.

This plastic is very light. It has a low density. This means we can make many parts with just a little bit of plastic.

It is also very tough and can stand a lot of heat. It resists many chemicals, too. This makes it good for things like laboratory tools.

The way the chains are built is called tacticity. This describes how small parts called methyl groups sit on the chain. In most plastic, these groups stay on one side. This makes the plastic stiff and strong. This is called isotactic polypropylene. Other ways of building the chains make the plastic different. Some types are clear. Others are rubbery or soft.

If the plastic stays in the sun too long, it can crack. We can add special parts to help it stay strong.
