It is made from a substance called styrene. Scientists make it through polymerization. This is a way of linking small parts together into long chains.

These chains make the plastic strong.

Polystyrene can be hard or soft. Some is clear and brittle, like a CD case.

Other kinds are light foams. This foam is used for packing.

It helps keep items safe during shipping.

Heat changes how the plastic acts. It is a thermoplastic, which means it melts when heated. It flows well above 100 °C. This helps makers shape it into cups or trays. Once it cools, it becomes hard again.

This plastic does not break down easily in nature. It can become litter in the ocean. However, some living things can help. Mealworms can eat the white foam.

They can even stay healthy on this diet. Some tiny bacteria might also help break it down in the future.
