Polypropylene is a very important kind of plastic.

It is the second most common plastic made in the world. Scientists call it a thermoplastic polymer. This means it can be melted and shaped many times. It is a white and very rugged material. It also has high chemical resistance.

This helps it stay strong when it touches many liquids. It is a useful tool for making many different things.

Making this plastic is a step-by-step way of working. It uses a process called chain-growth polymerization.

First, small bits called monomers named propylene are used. These monomers join together to form long chains. The way these chains are built is called tacticity. This describes how small parts called methyl groups sit on the chain.

In most commercial plastic, these groups stay on one side. This is called isotactic polypropylene. This special shape makes the plastic stiff and strong.

People have been studying this plastic for a long time. In 1951, chemists J. Paul Hogan and Robert Banks first showed how to join propylene together. Later, in March 1954, Giulio Natta and Karl Rehn discovered how to make the chains stay on one side. This was a huge discovery. It allowed a firm in Italy named Montecatini to start making it for everyone in 1957. Scientists are still finding new ways to make it today. Some even want to make it from plants in the 21st century.

Polypropylene has many interesting numbers and facts. It has a very low density between 0.895 and 0.93 g/cm3. This means it is very light. Because it is light, we can make many parts with very little plastic.

Most commercial versions have an isotactic index between 85% and 95%. The melting point for these plastics can range from 160 to 165 °C. If the temperature goes below 0 °C, the plastic can become brittle. It can also crack if it stays in the sun too long.

You can see this plastic in many places around you. It is used to make many household items. It is even used for plastic pipework in buildings. Some versions are made even stronger by adding ethylene. This helps the plastic stay tough even when it is cold. It is also used to make things like laboratory tools.

Because it is so useful, it is a part of our everyday lives.
