Polly Adler was a famous businesswoman in New York City. She was born Pearl Adler on April 16, 1900. Her family came from a Russian-Jewish background. They lived in a city called Yanow in Imperial Russia. When she was thirteen, her parents sent her to America. She traveled with a cousin to find a safer life. Her cousin turned back, so Polly had to travel alone.

Polly's early life in America was very hard. She lived in Springfield, Massachusetts, for a short time. She worked as a house cleaner and in a paper mill. Later, she moved to Brooklyn to live with cousins. She worked in clothing factories and as a seamstress. At age seventeen, she faced a very difficult and unfair situation. This led her to move to Manhattan to start over.

In Manhattan, Polly met many theater people. They gave her the nickname "Polly." In 1920, a man named Nicolas Montana introduced her to a new business. She began working in a two-room apartment near Columbia University. She earned $100 a week at that time. After a short attempt at running a lingerie shop, she decided to run her own business. She became a madam, which means she ran a house for working women.

Polly was a very smart businesswoman. She moved her business into grand buildings like the Majestic Tower. This building was finished in 1931 by architects Schwartz and Gross. It had a bar that looked like a famous Egyptian tomb. It also had a Chinese Room for playing games. Many famous people visited her, like Mayor Jimmy Walker and writer Dorothy Parker.

Polly had many legal troubles during her career. She was arrested many times for her business. In 1935, she was sentenced to 30 days in jail. She spent her time there scrubbing the floors. She retired in 1945 and moved to Los Angeles. She even went to college and earned a degree. In 1953, she published her book, "A House Is Not a Home." Two million people bought her story.
