Poipet

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Poipet is a significant city located in Cambodia. It sits within the Poipet Municipality of Banteay Meanchey province. The city is positioned very close to the border of Thailand. It is situated directly adjacent to the Thai town of Aranyaprathet. Poipet serves as a vital crossing point for trade between the two nations. It acts as a major gateway for movement across the border. This role makes the city an essential part of the regional economy.

The city was created for a specific purpose. It was established to facilitate border trade between Cambodia and Thailand. Before Poipet existed, the area was primarily used for agriculture. The nearby town of Sisophon served as the main urban center. Poipet is a relatively recent development compared to older cities. Its growth is tied directly to its position as a trade hub. This focus on commerce has shaped its entire identity.

Poipet has experienced rapid demographic growth over the last few decades. In the 1998 census, the population was 43,366 people. By the 2008 census, the population had increased to 89,549 people. This growth made Poipet the fourth most populous settlement in Cambodia. It is now larger than the provincial capital, Sisophon. It also ranks ahead of the city of Sihanoukville in population size. This expansion reflects the city's booming status as a border gateway.

The city is famous for its large casino and gambling industry. This industry attracts a significant number of foreign visitors. There is a specific strip of casinos and hotels located at the border. This strip sits between the Cambodian and Thai passport control counters. This unique layout allows Thais and other foreigners to gamble without entering Cambodian immigration. However, travelers must pass a second border to visit the rest of Cambodia. In Cambodia, gambling is illegal for citizens but allowed for foreign passport holders.

Poipet is a very international place due to its economy. Many foreigners live and work in the city. Indonesians make up a large portion of the foreign population. Many work in the casinos or as admins for online gambling. Because of this, Indonesian restaurants and food stalls are easy to find. There are also about 8,000 Chinese citizens living in the area. Thai citizens are also frequently found within the city limits.

Transportation is a key part of Poipet's connection to the world. The city serves as the terminus for the Cambodia railway system. In 2006, plans were made to restore the rail link to Sisophon. An Australian company was prepared to carry out this work in 2008. Thailand also passed legislation in 2009 to extend its railway to Poipet. This rail line was eventually reactivated in 2018. In 2022, the government began studying high-speed railways. These studies look at connecting Phnom Penh to the Thai border.

The city has also seen periods of intense activity and hardship. During the Khmer Rouge regime, Poipet was a critical location for aid. It was the first place in Cambodia where International Relief Organisations could support Thai Border Camps. United Nations staff were able to cross the border freely during this time. More recently, the city has been linked to reports of guarded compounds. These compounds are connected to online scam operations and trafficking. In December 2022, a fire at the Grand Diamond City Hotel and Casino killed 27 people. This event serves as a reminder of the complex nature of the city's rapid development.
