Erdenet

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Erdenet is a major urban center in northern Mongolia. It serves as the provincial capital of the Orkhon province. The city is the third-largest in the entire country. Its name translates to "precious" or "valuable" in Mongolian. Geographically, the city sits within a valley. This valley is positioned between the Selenge and Orkhon rivers. Erdenet is located northwest of the national capital, Ulaanbaatar. It is also situated near the town of Darkhan.

The history of Erdenet is tied closely to natural resources. Large deposits of copper were discovered in the area during the 1950s. This discovery led to the formal founding of the settlement in 1974. To support the growing industry, a single-track railway was built. This line was inaugurated in 1977. It connects Erdenet to the larger Trans-Mongolian Railway. This infrastructure allowed for the movement of goods and people across the region.

Demographics in Erdenet have shifted significantly over the decades. In the mid-1980s, the city had a very international population. More than 50% of the inhabitants were Russian citizens. Many of these people worked as miners or engineers. After the fall of Soviet Communism in 1990, most Russians departed. By the 2018 census, the population reached 98,057 people. Today, Russians make up about 10% of the city's residents.

The Erdenet Mining Corporation is the economic heart of the city. This company is a joint Mongolian-Russian venture. It is a vital part of the national economy. The mine accounts for 13.5% of Mongolia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It also provides 7% of the nation's total tax revenue. This industry generates a majority of Mongolia's hard currency income. Approximately 8,000 people are employed directly at the mine site.

The mining operations involve processing massive quantities of material. Each year, the corporation mines 22.23 million tons of ore. This process yields 126,700 tons of copper. It also produces 1,954 tons of molybdenum, which is a type of metal. Beyond mining, the city has other industrial sectors. The Erdenet Carpet Factory was established in 1981. It is located about 5 kilometers east of the city center. The factory processes roughly 2,000 tons of wool annually with 1,100 workers.

Cultural landmarks offer insight into the history of the Orkhon province. The Mining Museum is located in the Palace of Culture on the central square. Another site is the Museum of Orkhon Province, which was founded in 1983. In the northeast, a Friendship Monument stands on a hill. The city is also near the Amarbayasgalant Monastery. This Buddhist site was founded between 1727 and 1737. It was partially destroyed in 1937 but was restored after 1975 with help from UNESCO.

Travelers can reach Erdenet through several different methods. A paved road links the city to Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan, and Bulgan. Buses run several times each day for easy access. The distance to the capital is 445 kilometers. A car journey typically takes about eight hours. The nearest airport is located in Ulaanbaatar. This makes air travel an option for those arriving from further away.

The climate in Erdenet is classified as cold semi-arid. This means the environment is relatively dry. The weather patterns change clearly between the seasons. Summers are typically warm and experience rain. However, the nights remain cool even in the summer. Winters are quite different from the warmer months. They are characterized as being long, very cold, and dry.
