It is a joyful time for Bengali people everywhere. This festival celebrates the first day of the month of Boishakh. It usually falls on 14 April in Bangladesh. In Indian states like West Bengal, it is on 14 or 15 April. The holiday is tied to the spring harvest. People use this day to put the past behind them. It is a time for unity and new beginnings.

One famous event is the Mangal Shobhajatra. This is a large, colorful parade held at dawn. Students from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka organize it. UNESCO named this procession a piece of human heritage in 2016. People also visit local fairs called Baishakhi fairs. These fairs often have a Nagordola, which is a wooden Ferris wheel. Children might even see a Bioscope, an old type of movie projector.

Business owners have their own way to celebrate.

This tradition is called Haal Khata. Shopkeepers and traders use this day to finish old accounts. They open a brand new ledger, or record book, for the year. They might even invite loyal customers to share sweets. This helps everyone start their work with a fresh page. Many people wear red and white clothes for the day.

Women often wear saris and flower crowns. Men might wear a kurta, which is a traditional shirt.

The history of this calendar is very interesting.

Some say the Mughal Emperor Akbar helped start it. He wanted a way to collect taxes after the harvest. He asked an astronomer named Fathullah Shirazi to make a new calendar. This helped combine different calendar systems. Other historians think it might have started even earlier. They point to the 7th-century king Shashanka or the Pala Empire. The roots also connect to the Mahifarash, a community of fishmongers in Old Dhaka.

Food is a huge part of the festivities.

Many families enjoy a dish called Panta Bhat. This is rice that has been soaked in water overnight. They often eat it with fried Hilsa fish and special spicy pastes. At fairs, you can find many sweet treats. People love eating Sandesh, Jilipi, and sugar candies like Batasha. These traditions bring people of many different faiths together. It is a beautiful way to celebrate a shared culture.
