Plating

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Plating is a specialized finishing process where a thin layer of metal is deposited onto a surface. This technique has been used for hundreds of years to modify the properties of objects. It serves many critical roles in modern technology and industry. Plating can be used for decoration, such as giving jewelry a gold finish. It is also used for corrosion inhibition, which prevents metals from rusting or breaking down. Other uses include improving solderability, hardening a surface, or reducing friction. It can even improve paint adhesion or change how well a material conducts electricity.

One primary method of plating is electroplating, which relies on electricity to move metal. This process requires a chemical solution containing the metal in an ionic form. The setup includes an anode, which is a positively charged electrode. It can be a soluble anode made of the metal being plated or an insoluble anode made of carbon, platinum, titanium, lead, or steel. The object to be coated acts as the cathode, which is a negatively charged electrode. When electrons are supplied to the cathode, they cause the ionic metal in the solution to form a non-ionic coating on the substrate.

Another method is electroless deposition, also called chemical or auto-catalytic plating. This is a non-galvanic method, meaning it does not use external electrical power. Instead, several simultaneous chemical reactions occur within an aqueous solution. A reducing agent, such as sodium hypophosphite or thiourea, is used to trigger the reaction. As hydrogen is released and oxidized, it produces a negative charge on the surface of the part. This method is commonly used for electroless nickel plating. It can also be used to apply silver, gold, or copper layers, a technique known as angel gilding.

There are many other specialized plating techniques used for specific industrial needs. In vapor deposition, metals are plated under a vacuum. Sputter deposition is another technical method for applying thin films. Some processes involve covering a solid surface with a metal sheet and using heat and pressure to fuse them together. This specific version is known as Sheffield plate. In nanotechnology, thin-film deposition can plate objects as small as a single atom.

History shows how plating has changed our access to materials. Since the 18th century, silver plating has provided cheaper versions of household items. These items, like cutlery and candlesticks, look like solid silver but use a base metal. The earliest form was Sheffield Plate, which fused silver sheets to a core of base metal. In the 19th century, the invention of electroplating changed production. In the UK, there are strict laws regarding the naming of these items. It is illegal to describe silver-plated items as "silver," though the term "silver plate" is used by collectors.

Different metals are chosen based on their unique chemical and physical properties. Gold plating is vital in electronics because it provides a corrosion-resistant, conductive layer on copper. To prevent copper atoms from diffusing through the gold and causing tarnish, engineers often create a "copper-nickel-gold sandwich" using a nickel barrier layer. Chrome plating is used for both decoration and industrial strength. Thin, bright chrome creates a mirror-like finish for automotive trim. Thicker deposits, reaching up to 1000 μm, are called hard chrome and are used to reduce wear in industrial equipment.

Zinc plating is widely used for hardware because it acts as a sacrificial anode. If the zinc barrier is damaged, it protects the underlying metal from oxidation. For even higher protection, zinc-nickel plating can be used. This alloy offers over five times the protection of conventional zinc and can last 1,500 hours in neutral salt spray tests. Tin plating is also essential, especially in the food industry. Tin is non-toxic, ductile, and highly corrosion resistant. Its ductility allows coated metal sheets to be formed into various shapes without damaging the surface.

Plating also connects to broader environmental and scientific discussions. Cadmium plating is used in the aerospace and military fields because of its excellent corrosion resistance and malleability. However, it is being phased out because cadmium is environmentally toxic. Similarly, the use of hexavalent chromium in plating is regulated because it is a human carcinogen. In electronics, the use of lead in tin plating was limited by RoHS regulations starting in 2006. These rules aim to reduce hazardous substances while still managing risks like the growth of metallic "whiskers" that can cause electrical shorts.
