Pit viper

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Pit vipers are a special group of snakes. They live in Asia and the Americas. These snakes are venomous. This means they use venom to hunt.

One thing makes them unique. They have deep pits on their heads. These pits sit between the eye and the nostril. These are called loreal pits. These pits lead to organs that sense heat. This helps them find warm prey in the dark. It even helps them judge the size of their food.

These snakes live in many places. Some live in dry deserts. Others live in wet rainforests. Some even live high in the mountains. One species lives in the water. Most pit vipers hunt at night. They are ambush predators. This means they wait patiently for food to walk by.

Some pit vipers are very small. The hump-nosed viper is quite tiny. Other snakes grow very large. The bushmaster can reach a big length. Most pit vipers give birth to live young. The eggs stay inside the mother until they are ready. This is called being ovoviviparous. Some species lay eggs instead. These mothers often guard their eggs.
