Boas are a large family of snakes. They are often called boids. Most live in the Americas. Some live in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Boas can grow to be very big. The green anaconda is a famous boa. It is the heaviest snake in the world. In many boa species, the females are larger than the males.

These snakes have a special way of eating. They use constriction to catch prey. This means they wrap their bodies around an animal. The coils apply pressure to stop the animal from breathing. This causes the animal to suffocate. Large boas may eat animals the size of a house cat. Some even eat young tapirs.

Boas are different from pythons in a few ways. Most boas are ovoviviparous. This means the females give birth to live young. Pythons lay eggs instead. Boas also have tiny parts on their bodies called spurs. These spurs are like small, leftover hind legs. In males, these spurs are easier to see than in females.
