It is native to tropical South America. These snakes are often called red-tailed boas. This is because they have reddish-brown patterns on their tails. These colors help them hide in forests.

Female boas are usually larger than males. A large female can weigh up to 13.6 kilograms. Most boas live alone. They are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They also like to swim in rivers.

To eat, the boa uses a special way of hunting. It is an ambush predator. This means it waits for prey to come near. The snake strikes and grabs the animal with its teeth. Then, it wraps its body around the prey. This is called constriction. It uses strong muscles to squeeze. This stops the blood flow to the prey's heart and brain.

The snake then eats the meal whole. It can take up to six days to digest food. After eating, a boa may not eat for months.
