It shows a small plastic crucifix inside a glass tank. The tank is filled with a liquid that looks orange or rosy. Serrano said the liquid is his own urine. The photo is a Cibachrome print with very bright colors. It also shows a constellation of tiny bubbles. Some people find the image beautiful and mysterious.

This artwork is part of a larger series of photos. Serrano placed different objects in various fluids. He used milk and blood in other works. This photo followed his 1985 work called "Blood Cross."

Serrano did not mean to be mean or disrespectful. He is a Catholic and a follower of Christ. He said the art points to how Christ died. He wanted to show the reality of the crucifixion. He felt the work was a serious piece of Christian art.

Many people had very strong feelings about this photo. Some thought it was blasphemous, which means disrespectful to religion. In 1989, the work caused a big scandal. Two United States Senators, Al D'Amato and Jesse Helms, were very angry. They did not like that the National Endowment for the Arts gave money to the project. Serrano received $15,000 for the work. He also received $5,000 in 1986. This led to a big debate about government money and art.

Because of the controversy, the art was sometimes attacked. In 1997, two teenagers used a hammer to attack the work in Australia. Later, in 2011, protesters in France damaged a print beyond repair.

These events happened because people had very different views on the art. Some people argued for artistic freedom. They believed artists should be allowed to express themselves. Others felt the art crossed a line with their faith. These debates have lasted for many years.

Even with the hard times, the art remains important. In 2022, a print sold at a London auction for £130,000.

In 2023, Serrano had a special meeting in the Vatican. He met with Pope Francis in the Sistine Chapel. The Pope gave him a thumbs up gesture of approval. Serrano was happy the Church saw him as a Christian artist. This meeting helped show a new way for the Church to talk about art.
