The photo shows a small plastic cross in a glass tank. The tank is filled with a bright orange liquid. Serrano said the liquid is his own urine. The photo has a deep, rosy glow. It also has many tiny bubbles. One critic said the image looks beautiful and mysterious.

Many people were very upset by this art. They thought it was disrespectful to their religion. Some leaders in the United States were angry. They did not want the government to give money to the artist. This caused a big debate about art and money.

Because of the anger, some people hurt the art. In one place, people used a hammer to break it. In another place, protesters damaged a print of the photo.

Serrano said he is a Christian. He said the work was not meant to be mean. He wanted to show a hard truth about how Christ died. In 2023, Serrano met with Pope Francis. The Pope gave him a thumbs up. Serrano was happy the Church understood his work.
