It tells a magical story about a wooden puppet. An old woodcarver named Geppetto creates him in a small Italian village. A Blue Fairy brings the puppet to life during the night. Pinocchio wants to become a real human boy. To do this, he must prove he is brave, truthful, and unselfish. A cricket named Jiminy serves as his conscience to help him.

The movie follows Pinocchio as he learns many hard lessons. He meets a fox named Honest John and a cat named Gideon. They trick him into joining a puppet show owned by Stromboli. Later, Pinocchio goes to a place called Pleasure Island. There, he meets a boy named Lampwick and sees boys turn into donkeys. Pinocchio must eventually face a huge sperm whale named Monstro. He goes into the sea to save Geppetto from the whale's belly.

Making this film was a huge job for the artists. They wanted to create very realistic movement for everything on screen. They worked hard to show natural things like rain and smoke. They even made water, lightning, and shadows look real. This was a groundbreaking achievement for animation at that time. The team used new ways to make machines and vehicles move naturally. These special effects helped make the world of the film feel alive.

The film has a very interesting history. It was based on a book by Carlo Collodi from 1883. Walt Disney wanted to make the character more likable than in the book. Animators like Milt Kahl helped make Pinocchio look more like a real boy. The film premiered in New York City on February 7, 1940. It was released in theaters on February 23, 1940. It won two Academy Awards for its wonderful original music. One song was "When You Wish Upon a Star."

Even though it was a masterpiece, it did not succeed right away. World War II made it hard to sell the film in Europe and Asia. This caused the movie to be a commercial failure at first. However, it made a profit after it was released again in 1945. Today, the characters are still very popular in many places. You can see them at Disney parks and in other entertainment. In 1994, it was added to the United States National Film Registry.
