The film is meant to feel like a concert. Music critic Deems Taylor acts as the Master of Ceremonies. He appears in live-action scenes to introduce each part. This helps the audience get ready for the next musical journey.

Making the film was a very big job. It started with a short cartoon called The Sorcerer's Apprentice. In this part, Mickey Mouse tries to use magic.

Walt Disney had many big ideas for this project. He wanted to go beyond simple cartoons. He wanted to show "sheer fantasy."

He met a famous conductor named Leopold Stokowski in Hollywood. Stokowski led the Philadelphia Orchestra for the film. He even offered to conduct for free to help. Disney and Stokowski worked together to pick the music. They held many meetings to discuss which songs would work best. They even played the music during these meetings to test ideas.

Creating the sound was a huge step forward. Disney and RCA made a new system called Fantasound.

This was a pioneering sound system. It made Fantasia the first commercial film shown in stereo. This was a precursor to the surround sound we use today. The film was first shown in a "roadshow." This meant it played in 13 different cities in the U.S. The first show was at the Broadway Theatre in New York City. It opened on November 13, 1940.

Even though people loved the film, it had hard times. It did not make a profit at first. World War II made it hard to show the film in Europe. The high costs of making the film were also a problem.

However, the film's reputation grew over many years. It is now seen as one of the greatest animated films ever. In 1998, the American Film Institute ranked it very highly. The Library of Congress even chose it for preservation. They said it is culturally and historically significant.
