Fantasia is a landmark 1940 American animated musical anthology film.

An anthology is a collection of different works grouped together. Instead of one long story, this film presents eight distinct animated segments. Each segment is set to a specific piece of classical music. The film aims to create a concert-like experience for the audience. To guide viewers, music critic Deems Taylor serves as the Master of Ceremonies.

He appears in live-action scenes to introduce each musical segment.

The film's structure relies on a precise connection between sound and sight. The process began with selecting classical compositions to drive the animation. Leopold Stokowski, a famous conductor, led the musical performances.

Seven of the eight segments feature the Philadelphia Orchestra. Once the music was recorded, animators created visuals to match the rhythms and moods. Some segments use abstract shapes, while others tell specific stories. For example, the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Bach uses abstract patterns.

Other parts use characters to represent the music's energy.

The segments vary greatly in their themes and visual styles. The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky uses dancing fairies and flowers to show changing seasons. The Sorcerer's Apprentice, based on a 1797 poem by Goethe, features Mickey Mouse. In this segment, Mickey attempts magic under the sorcerer Yen Sid but loses control. The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky depicts a visual history of Earth, including the era of dinosaurs. The Pastoral Symphony by Beethoven portrays a mythical Greco-Roman world.

Other segments include the comic ballet Dance of the Hours and the intense Night on Bald Mountain.

The project grew from a single idea into a massive production. In 1936, Walt Disney wanted to boost Mickey Mouse's popularity. He began working on a short film called The Sorcerer's Apprentice. However, the production costs for this short reached $125,000. This was four times higher than the average Silly Symphony cartoon. Disney and his brother Roy realized a single short could not earn back such high costs. They decided to expand the project into a full-length feature film.

This new concept was called "The Concert Feature."

Technical innovation was a central part of the film's creation. Disney and RCA developed a pioneering sound system called Fantasound. This system allowed the film to be the first commercial movie shown in stereo. Fantasound served as a vital precursor to modern surround sound technology. The film's release was also unique, using a "roadshow" format. This meant it played in only 13 cities across the United States initially. The first roadshow premiere took place at the Broadway Theatre in New York City on November 13, 1940.

Despite its artistic success, the film faced significant financial challenges. It failed to make an initial profit due to several factors. World War II prevented the film from being distributed in European markets. Additionally, the high costs of production and the expensive Fantasound equipment weighed on the studio. The expense of leasing specific theaters for the roadshow presentations also added to the burden. However, the film's long-term value is immense. When adjusted for inflation, it is the 23rd highest-grossing film in U.S. history.

Over the decades, Fantasia has earned a massive reputation in film history. In 1998, the American Film Institute ranked it as the 58th greatest American film. They also named it the fifth greatest animated film ever made. In 1990, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. They noted the film is culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant. The franchise has since expanded into video games, Disneyland attractions, and live concerts. A sequel, titled Fantasia 2000, was released in 1999 to continue this musical legacy.
