To make it, people use a way called destructive distillation. They put wood in a closed container. Then they add heat and pressure. This breaks the wood down into two parts. One part is charcoal. The other part is pine tar. The tar's makeup changes based on the wood used. It also depends on the heat and how long it burns.

People have used pine tar for a very long time. In Sweden, pits were used to make it long ago. One pit dates back to 540 BCE. This might be the oldest tar site in the world! In the 1600s, many ships needed tar. It helped keep wooden boats and ropes from rotting. Sailors who worked with tar were called "tars."

Today, pine tar has many uses. It helps horses with skin problems. It can even help chickens by covering their wounds. In sports, players put it on baseball bats. This helps them get a better grip. But players must follow rules about where they put it.
