Pillars of Creation

The Pillars of Creation are giant towers in space.

They sit inside the Eagle Nebula. These towers are made of gas and dust. They also contain cool molecular hydrogen. This is a type of gas.

These towers help make new stars. Small clumps of gas act like tiny eggs. We call these EGGs. New stars grow inside these EGGs. As the stars grow, they come out of the eggs. Then the eggs disappear.

Bright light from hot stars hits the towers. This light wears the towers away. This way of wearing them down is called photoevaporation.

The leftmost pillar is very long. It is about four light-years in length.

Some scientists think a shock wave might destroy the pillars. A supernova is a huge star explosion. This explosion might have hit the towers 6,000 years ago. If that happened, we might see it from Earth soon.

We have seen these towers with many tools. The Hubble Space Telescope took a famous photo in 1995. The James Webb Space Telescope also took new images in 2022.
