It was made by Arnold Schoenberg in 1912. The piece uses 21 poems by Albert Giraud. A singer tells these poems in a special way. This way is called Sprechstimme. It is a style of speaking voice. The singer follows the rhythm and pitch. But they do not hold the notes like a song. This makes the poems feel very alive.

A small group of instruments plays with the singer.

This group uses a flute and a clarinet. It also uses a violin, a cello, and a piano. Musicians call this a Pierrot ensemble. This group of instruments is still very important in music today.

The poems are split into three groups of seven. The first poems are about love. The second poems are about crime and violence. The third poems are about going home. Schoenberg used many patterns of the number seven. There are seven people in the group. Each poem also has thirteen lines. A typical show lasts about 35 to 40 minutes.
