Suite bergamasque

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Claude Debussy wrote a set of piano songs called Suite bergamasque. He started the work around 1890. He later changed it before it was published in 1905. The music has four parts.

The first part is the Prélude. It has a smooth and flowing feel. The second part is a Menuet. It has light and fluttery notes. The third part is very famous. Its name is Clair de lune. This means "moonlight" in French.

Clair de lune comes from a poem by Paul Verlaine. It is one of the most famous piano pieces ever. The last part is a Passepied. This is a type of dance from Brittany. It is fast and light.

Many people have changed these songs for other instruments. One part was meant for a Disney film called Fantasia. It was not in the first version of the movie. But it was found again in 1992. These songs are used in many places today. They are even used in video games and at the Olympics.
