Physical education is a subject taught in schools all around the world. Many people call it PE or Phys. Ed. In the United States, students often call it gym class.

This subject is special because it helps students learn in many ways. It focuses on fitness, motor skills, and health awareness. It also helps students learn how to interact with others. PE aims to help young people stay active for their whole lives.

Learning in PE involves five different parts called the Five Learning Bodies. First is the Moving Body, which helps with coordination and control. Next is the Thinking Body, where students learn rules and strategies. The third part is the Emotional Body, which deals with feelings like joy or frustration. The fourth is the Social Body, where students learn to work in teams. Finally, the Cultural Body looks at how a student's background affects their movement.

Teachers use different ways to plan their lessons. One way is the Factory model, which works like an assembly line. In this model, everyone learns the same skill at the same time. Another way is the Garden model, which treats students like individuals. This model focuses on personal growth and making sure everyone feels safe. A third way is the Journey model, which is all about exploration. In a Journey lesson, students might research and teach games from different cultures.

Modern PE has roots that go back a long time. In the 1800s, people like Francois Delsarte, Liselott Diem, and Rudolf von Laban were pioneers. They believed children could use their bodies for self-expression. By the 1960s, new ideas about space and effort helped shape how we teach today. Now, teachers use many tools to help students succeed. They might use video recorders to show students their movement. They also use pedometers to track steps and heart rate monitors to track health.

Technology is becoming a big part of the gym. Some students play exergames, which are digital games that require physical movement. Teachers might even use GPS systems for outdoor activities. Even new AI tools are being used to help students with personal coaching. All of these tools aim to make staying active more fun and engaging.

The International Charter of Physical Education says that sport is a fundamental human right. This means everyone should have the chance to be active without being treated unfairly.
