Primary education is the very first stage of formal schooling.

It usually follows preschool or kindergarten. It comes before students move on to secondary education. Most countries have programs that last between three and six years. In the United States, the first seven to nine years are often included. These schools focus on building a solid foundation for all future learning. The main goal is to teach fundamental reading, writing, and math skills.

This stage of learning works by helping children develop during a very fast growth period. Experts study this in a field called developmental psychology. This science looks at the way children learn new things. Different countries use different names for these schools. In the United Kingdom, they might use the term "primary school." In other places, they are called "elementary" or "first schools." The International Standard Classification of Education calls this level ISCED Level 1. It is the first step in basic education for every child.

Learning has changed a lot throughout history. Long ago, children learned by playing or following their instincts. In farming cultures, adults passed skills like building or trading to children. Some families used a private tutor to teach traditions. In ancient Greece, boys studied in academies. In Athens, they learned music, math, and the laws of their city. In Rome, primary schools were known as a "ludus."

Roman teachers like Quintilian even suggested making lessons interesting to help students learn.

During the Middle Ages, religious communities became the main providers of education. Many schools were run by monasteries or large cathedral schools. In England, the Kings School in Canterbury dates back to the year 597. Some schools, called chantry schools, were built using donations to help the poor. In the 1600s, the colony of Massachusetts became the first to require schooling. Children there used a book called the New England Primer to learn.

This book was sometimes called "The Little Bible of New England."

In England, the government began to fund state education in 1870. These elementary schools taught the "three Rs," which are reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Before 1944, many children stayed in these schools until they were 14. A new law in 1944 changed the system into three clear stages. These stages are primary, secondary, and further education. Today, groups like UNICEF believe primary school helps the whole world. It can help lower poverty and encourage equality for everyone.
