She was known for her amazing skill and her great sense of humor. People loved watching her move on stage. She could perform many different kinds of roles. Some roles were very soft and lyrical. Other roles were dramatic or very fast and exciting. She even danced beautiful Spanish dances. Her talent helped make ballet special for many people in her home country.

Her journey in dance began when she was very young. She started taking ballet classes at age four. She grew up in a suburb called Orange Grove in Johannesburg. Her school headmistress saw her great talent. This allowed her to leave school early to study dance. At age 16, she moved to London to train. She went to the Royal Ballet School. She was a very fast learner there. After only a few months, she performed in Swan Lake at Covent Garden.

Spira had a very busy professional career. She joined the Royal Ballet touring company at age 17. She traveled to many places like Europe and Japan. She also danced in the Middle East and Scandinavia. From 1960 to 1963, she worked with this famous touring group. She was even promoted to a soloist in 1961. She worked with many famous dance partners. One partner was Gary Burne, and another was Eduard Greyling. In 1984, she received a very special title. She was named the first South African Prima Ballerina Assoluta. This is a very rare and high honor. She also received the Order for Meritorious Service, Gold. This is a top award for excellence in South Africa.

After she stopped dancing in 1988, she found new ways to help. An injury during a show ended her time on stage. She became a ballet mistress for the Cape Town City Ballet. She and her husband, Philip Boyd, focused on community service. They ran the Dance for All program. This program brought dance to children in many different areas. It helped more than seven hundred children every year. She worked hard to share dance with everyone.
