Phuket is a significant city located in Thailand. It sits in the southeast portion of Phuket Island. The city serves as the capital of the Phuket province. It is positioned 862 km south of Bangkok. This city is a major urban center in the region. It acts as a central hub for the island's many activities. Many people live and work within its borders.

The city has a large and growing population. The municipality itself has 71,284 residents. However, the entire Amphoe Mueang district is much larger. It contains an urban population of 252,515 people. When you look at the broader metropolitan area, the number reaches approximately 430,000. Records show the population has increased steadily since 2005. In 2005, there were 74,208 people. By 2019, that number grew to 79,308 in the municipality.

Phuket is one of the oldest cities in Thailand. Its history is tied to its location on the sea. It served as an important port on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula. This location was vital for Chinese immigrants who first landed there. The city grew wealthy due to the tin mining industry. This industry was a major part of the island's economy. This prosperity helped shape the physical look of the town. In 2004, the town was officially elevated to city status, known as thesaban nakhon.

A very special part of the city is Phuket Old Town. This area covers 2.7 square kilometers, which is 210 rai. It is a quarter made of ten specific streets. These streets are Klang, Phang Nga, Rassada, and Dee Buk. You can also find Krabi, Thep Kasattri, and Phuket streets. The remaining streets are Yaowarat, Satun, and Soi Rammanee. This area is famous for its unique architectural style. This style is called Sino-Portuguese.

Sino-Portuguese architecture combines Chinese and European influences. These buildings are often one or two storeys tall. They usually have a narrow front. However, they compensate for this with considerable depth. You can see this influence in the tiles and doors. The perforated windows also show these blended styles. Because of this beauty, authorities are working on a proposal. The Fine Arts Department and provincial authorities want UNESCO to list it as a World Heritage Site.

Culture and religion play a major role in Phuket. The major religion practiced by the people is Buddhism. Many attractive Buddhist temples draw national and international tourists. You can also find Hindu temples throughout the city streets. These temples feature statues of Ganesha and Brahma. Food is another important cultural pillar. In 2015, UNESCO registered Phuket in its Creative Cities Network. It was named a City of Gastronomy. It was the first city in Southeast Asia to receive this specific title. This honors its unique and multicultural cuisines.

Transportation in the city is well-established for locals and tourists. Many people use vehicles called songthaews to travel. These vehicles come in different colors for different routes. Pink songthaews make stops around the Phuket Old Town area. Blue songthaews connect the Old Town to various beach resorts. This helps people move between the city and the coast. Phuket International Airport is located northwest of the Old Town. There is an hourly scheduled bus service from the airport to the city.

Phuket connects to many other important places and ideas. The city has sister city relationships with other locations. These include Las Vegas in the United States. It also has a connection to George Town in Penang, Malaysia. The city is part of several larger geographic systems. It is linked to the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean. It is also recognized as a major port city in Asia. This makes Phuket a key part of the maritime history of Southeast Asia.
