In our bodies, phosphate helps us stay healthy. It is a main part of our bones and teeth. These hard parts use a mineral called hydroxyapatite.

This mineral makes our skeletons strong. Phosphate also helps cells work. It helps move power through the cell. This happens through a way called metabolism.

Plants also need phosphate to grow. They take it up from the soil.

Because plants need it, people mine phosphate from rocks. We use these rocks to make fertilizer for farms.

Large mines find these rocks in many places. Morocco has very large amounts of these reserves. China is the biggest producer in the world.

We must use phosphate carefully. Some mines leave behind heavy metals. These can wash into the water. We also need to watch how much we use. Some scientists think we may run out of these reserves soon.
