It is found in the Earth's crust as phosphate rock. This rock is very important for farming. It helps make fertilizers that help plants grow.

Without these fertilizers, it would be hard to grow enough food.

Phosphorus is also part of every living thing. It helps make your bones and teeth strong. It is even part of the DNA that holds your body's instructions.

A man named Hennig Brand found it in 1669. He was looking for a magic stone. He found a white, waxy substance instead. This white phosphorus can glow in the dark. It can also burn very easily. Because it is dangerous, we use a different kind for matches. We call this red phosphorus. It is much safer for people to use.
