Promethium is a very rare chemical element. It has the symbol Pm. Its atomic number is 61.

This element is very hard to find. Only about 500 to 600 grams exist in the Earth's crust at one time. Most of it comes from the decay of europium. It also comes from the fission of uranium.

All forms of promethium are radioactive. This means they are unstable. Scientists often make it in labs. They do this by hitting uranium with neutrons. This process makes promethium-147.

We use promethium-147 for many things. It is used in luminous paint that glows. It is also used in atomic batteries. It can even help measure how thick things are.

In 1902, a man named Bohuslav Brauner thought this element existed. He saw a gap between two other elements. In 1914, Henry Moseley proved the gap was real. He measured atomic numbers to find the missing piece. In 1945, scientists finally identified it at a lab in Oak Ridge. They named it after Prometheus. He was a figure from Greek myths.
