Promethium is a very rare chemical element with the symbol Pm. It has the atomic number 61. This element is part of a group called the lanthanides.

Every single version of promethium is radioactive. This means the atoms are unstable and break down over time. Because it breaks down so fast, it is hard to find. There are only about 500 to 600 grams in the Earth's crust at any time. It is one of the few elements that sits between two stable elements. This makes it a very special part of the periodic table.

Nature makes promethium in a few small ways. Some of it comes from the decay of europium-151. This process turns europium into promethium-147. Other amounts come from the spontaneous fission of uranium.

Because natural amounts are so tiny, scientists often make it in labs. They do this by hitting uranium-235 with thermal neutrons. This bombardment creates promethium-147 as a product. This specific version is very useful for people to use. It can be used in glowing paint or atomic batteries. It also helps in devices that measure how thick something is.

People searched for this element for a long time. In 1902, a chemist named Bohuslav Brauner noticed something strange. He saw a gap between the elements neodymium and samarium. He thought a missing element must live between them. In 1914, Henry Moseley used atomic numbers to prove the gap was real.

Two different groups claimed to find it in 1926. However, both of those discoveries were actually false. It took much longer to find the real thing.

Promethium was finally identified in 1945. Scientists found it at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. They studied it after it was produced during a nuclear experiment. They named it after Prometheus from Greek mythology. Prometheus was a Titan who stole fire from Mount Olympus. The name was meant to show the daring of human intellect.

A real sample of the metal was not made until 1963. This shows how hard it is to work with.

Even though it is rare, we can see its effects. Promethium atoms have 61 electrons. When it forms compounds, it usually has a +3 charge. This makes it chemically similar to its neighbors. Many of its compounds look pink or red. Some versions can even be a lavender color. It is a tiny part of our world, but it is very interesting. We can even find traces of it in the stars of the Andromeda galaxy.
