Phosphite (ion)

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A phosphite ion is a tiny part of a chemical. It is often written as HPO3 2-. These ions come from a liquid called phosphorous acid.

Scientists use different names for these parts. The IUPAC group says the name should be phosphonate. This is the same name used for the acid. Some salts made from these ions are used in farming. One kind is called monopotassium phosphite. This salt helps plants by giving them potassium.

It is easy to mix up phosphites with phosphates. Phosphates are a main food for plants. Phosphites do not work as plant food. They change into phosphate too slowly. In fact, phosphites can even hurt plants if they lack phosphate.

Instead of food, phosphites act as fungicides. A fungicide is a tool used to fight bad mold. They help crops fight water molds. This keeps the plants safe. Some people call them fertilizers to avoid rules. But they are mostly used to fight disease. Scientists also study how these parts look. They often have a shape like a pyramid. We call this shape a tetrahedron.
