The Philokalia is a very important book. It is a collection of old writings. These texts were written by spiritual masters. They wrote them between the 4th and 15th centuries. This book is a main text for the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Two monks named Nicodemus and Macarius put the writings together. They lived at Mount Athos. This is a mountain in Greece. The monks used old books from a library to make the collection. The writings help people learn about hesychasm. This is a way of finding stillness or quietness through prayer.

One big idea in the book is watchfulness. This means paying close attention to your thoughts and feelings. It helps people stay focused on God. Many people use the Jesus Prayer to help them do this. Some thinkers say it is like mindfulness.

The book has been translated into many languages. These include Greek, Russian, and English. One famous Russian translation helped the book become popular with many people. In the 1900s, new English versions were made. These versions help people all over the world learn these old ways of prayer.
