One old story says Mary blessed this land. Because of this, women are not allowed to enter the area. The monks have lived there for a long time. Some lived there as far back as the 9th century. In the year 963, a monk named Athanasius started a large monastery. It was called the Great Lavra.

The mountain is full of life. It has many thick forests with oak and pine trees.

You can find animals like wolves and wild boars there. Many rare plants grow on the mountain too. In 1988, a group called UNESCO added it to a special list. They did this to protect its history and nature. The mountain stays a special place for faith today.
