Hesychasm is a way to find deep stillness. It is a tradition in Eastern Christian churches. The word comes from a Greek word for quiet.

Practitioners use a special prayer called the Jesus Prayer. They repeat these words to stay focused. This helps them keep their minds calm. Some monks use their bodies to help. They may bend their heads toward their chest. They also watch their breathing to help them pray. This is a way to bring the mind into the heart.

In the 1300s, a monk named Gregory Palamas defended this way of praying. Some people thought the practice was wrong. They did not agree with how monks saw God's light. Gregory said that God's light is real. He said people can know God through His actions. This helped make hesychasm a key part of the Orthodox Church. The practice has many steps. It starts with cleaning the heart. Then comes a time of light. The final goal is to be close to God. This path has been followed for many hundreds of years.
