Phase modulation

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Waves carry news to far away places. One way to do this is phase modulation. We call this PM for short.

In PM, we change a carrier wave. A carrier wave is a steady wave used to send a message. The message signal tells the wave how to change. In this way, the phase of the wave shifts. Phase is the timing of the wave.

As the message changes, the timing shifts too. The height of the wave stays the same. The speed of the wave also stays the same. This is different from frequency modulation. In frequency modulation, the speed of the wave changes.

PM is part of a group called angle modulation. It helps many things work today. It helps with Wi-Fi. It also helps with satellite TV. It helps with GSM, which is a way to send mobile phone signals.

Some tools use PM to make music. Digital synthesizers use it to make sounds. One famous tool is the Yamaha DX7. This tool uses a way called FM synthesis. PM is a smart way to send data.
