Phase modulation

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Phase modulation is a clever way to send information. We call this method PM for short. It helps prepare signals for transmission. This process is a type of angle modulation. PM works alongside frequency modulation. Both of these methods help carry messages through the air.

How does this way of working actually function? First, we start with a carrier wave. This wave stays steady in its height and speed. The message signal acts as the guide. It tells the carrier wave how to change its timing. We call this timing the phase. As the message signal changes, the phase shifts too. The peak amplitude and frequency stay constant.

Scientists use math to describe these waves. One way to show this is with a special equation. This equation describes a sinusoidal carrier wave. It uses terms like A(t) for the wave's height. It also uses a term for the phase deviation. This math helps show two main groups. One group is amplitude modulation. The other group is angle modulation.

PM is used in many modern technologies. It is a key part of digital transmission. You can find it in Wi-Fi systems. It also works in GSM mobile networks. Satellite television uses this method too. Some people use it to make music. Digital synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7 use it. They use it for FM synthesis. The Casio CZ uses a similar method called phase distortion.

PM is not used for all types of sound. It is not common for analog audio radio waves. This is because the receivers are quite complex. There is no extra benefit for audio signals. We can also look at the modulation index. This number shows how much the phase changes. It relates to the peak phase deviation. This helps us understand the signal better.
