Signal modulation

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

How do we send sounds and pictures through the air? We use waves to carry information.

A message signal can be a sound or a video. Sometimes these signals have a frequency that is too low. This means the waves are too big to send easily. To fix this, we use a carrier signal. This is a higher wave that carries the message.

We can change the carrier wave to hide the data inside. This set of steps is called signal modulation. One way is amplitude modulation, or AM. This changes the strength of the wave. Another way is frequency modulation, or FM. This changes how fast the wave vibrates.

Computers use digital modulation to send bits. Bits are the ones and zeros used by computers. We can use phase shift keying, or PSK. This changes the phase, or the timing, of the wave.

We can also use QAM. This changes both the strength and the timing at once. This lets us send much more data very quickly. A device called a modem can do both parts of this job. It can modulate and demodulate signals to help us talk online.
