life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The moon orchid is a very beautiful plant. You might also hear it called the moth orchid. It is a member of the orchid family. This plant is an epiphyte. An epiphyte is a plant that grows on other things like trees. It can also be a lithophyte. This means it grows on rocks. These orchids are famous for being lovely houseplants.

This orchid has a very interesting way it works. It has long and thick roots. It grows between two and eight thick, fleshy leaves. These leaves are dark green and shaped like eggs. The leaves hide the stem of the plant. A stiff stem grows out from the leaf base. This stem can hold up to ten white flowers. The flowers last for a long time. Each flower has a special part called a labellum. The labellum is white with yellow and red marks.

People have studied this plant for a long time. Georg Eberhard Rumphius found it on Ambon Island in 1750. He wrote about it in his book. Later, Carl Linnaeus gave it a scientific name. In 1825, Carl Ludwig Blume changed the name. The name Phalaenopsis amabilis means "lovely." One type was found by Gus Rosenstrom. He found it high on trees near the Daintree River. Frederick Manson Bailey later described it in a journal.

There are three different types of this orchid. The first type is found in the Philippines and Indonesia. It has a middle part on its flower that looks like a cross. The second type lives in the Maluku Islands and Sulawesi. The third type lives in New Guinea and Australia. In Australia, this type is considered endangered. This is because people sometimes collect them illegally. This subspecies grows near the Cape York Peninsula.

This orchid is very important in many places. It is one of the three national flowers of Indonesia. Indonesia calls it the "moon orchid." It is also the official flower of Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. Many people like to grow them at home. They do well in bright light from a window. They are good for people who are new to growing orchids. In 1887, John Veitch used it to make a new hybrid. This was the first man-made Phalaenopsis.
