This plant is known as the corpse flower or giant padma. It is famous for growing the largest individual flower on Earth. While other plants have larger flowering parts, those are actually clusters of many flowers. This plant produces one single, massive bloom. It is also one of the three national flowers of Indonesia.

This plant works in a very strange way. It is a parasite, which means it lives on other living things. It has no leaves, no stems, and no roots. It also lacks chlorophyll, so it is not green like most plants. Instead, it lives inside the cells of a vine called *Tetrastigma*. The plant grows as tiny, thread-like strands inside the host. You only see the plant when it is ready to make a flower. The flower starts as a dark, cabbage-like bud.

Making new seeds is a big job for this plant. The buds take many months to grow. A single bud can take a whole year to open. Once the flower opens, it only lasts for a few days. The flower is reddish-brown with white spots. It produces a strong smell of decaying flesh. This scent comes from sulfur-containing compounds. This smell tricks flies and beetles into visiting.

History tells us about the people who first found these plants. A French explorer named Louis Auguste Deschamps found a specimen in 1797. Later, a British surgeon named Joseph Arnold collected a specimen in 1818. Arnold died from a fever shortly after the discovery. A man named Robert Brown eventually studied the plants. He gave the genus the name *Rafflesia* to honor Stamford Raffles. There was much debate over the correct scientific names for many years.

There are many impressive numbers tied to this flower. The flower can grow to a diameter of about 1 meter. It can also weigh up to 11 kilograms. One huge flower was measured at 110 centimeters wide. In May 1956, a very large bud was found at Mount Sago in Sumatra. These plants prefer dark places on the forest floor. They are often found near water at high altitudes. This helps them survive in their tropical homes.
