Some people also include eggs and dairy in their meals. Others might follow a "seagan" diet, which means they avoid dairy and eggs too. This way of eating is often called a plant-based diet. It is a choice many people make for different reasons.

There are many ways to build a pescetarian meal. Most of the food comes from fresh plants and produce.

A person might eat a bowl of bean or pea soup. They could also have fish seasoned with herbs and apples. Some might enjoy bread, milk, or honey along with their seafood. The goal is to use plants as the main part of the diet. Seafood provides a different kind of protein than land animals do.

This way of eating has a very long history. In ancient Greece, the philosopher Pythagoras may have eaten fish.

In Japan, Emperor Tenmu banned eating most land animals in the year 675. By the year 737, the Emperor Shōmu said people could eat fish and shellfish. For hundreds of years, Japanese people ate mostly plant meals with seafood on special days. In Europe, many monks also chose to eat fish instead of meat. They often lived on diets of vegetables, eggs, and fish.

Today, about 3% of adults around the world are pescetarian.

This number can change depending on where you live. In Africa and the Middle East, about 5% of people follow this diet. In the United Kingdom, about 3% to 4% of adults are pescetarian. Research from 2017 to 2018 shows this diet is growing in popularity. In Great Britain, young women are the group most likely to follow it.

Many people choose this diet to help the planet. It can help lower a person's carbon footprint. One study found this diet could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45%.
