Our home is a big group of stars.
It has long arms that curve. One arm is named Perseus. It is named after a group of stars.
This arm is very long. It is also very wide. It is one of four big arms.
Our sun is near this arm. We see it in one part of the sky.
It has many bright star groups inside it. These stars shine in the dark sky.
The Milky Way is a big galaxy. It is a barred spiral galaxy. This means it has a bar shape in its center. It also has long arms that curve out. One of these big arms is the Perseus Arm.
Scientists named it after the Perseus constellation. We see this arm in that part of the sky. The arm is very long. It is more than 60,000 light-years long. It is about 1,000 light-years wide.
For a long time, people thought it was far away. They thought it was 13,000 light-years from Earth. New research says it is closer. It may be only 6,400 light-years away.
This arm holds many bright things. It has the Double Cluster. It also has the Crab Nebula. The arm sits between two smaller arms. Some think our own sun is part of a small branch near it. We are not sure yet.
The Milky Way is a huge barred spiral galaxy. It has a bar shape in its center. Two major arms curve out from this bar. One of these big arms is the Perseus Arm.
It is a very important part of our galaxy. This arm helps shape the whole Milky Way. Scientists study it to learn about space.
This arm has a very specific shape. It is more than 60,000 light-years long. It is about 1,000 light-years wide. The arm curves at a pitch angle of 9 degrees.
It sits between two smaller arms. These are the Cygnus and Carina–Sagittarius arms. The arm starts at the end of the central bar.
People used to think the arm was very far away. They thought it was 13,000 light-years from Earth. Research from 2005 changed this idea. Now we think it is much closer. It is likely only 6,400 light-years from our Solar System.
This new number helps us map our home better. Scientists use special tools to find these distances.
Two large projects help us map the arms. One is called VERA, which began in 2001. The other is the BeSSeL Survey, which began in 2010.
These groups study water vapor and methanol masers. These are bright spots in star-forming regions. They use parallax to find where things are. This work has lasted about 20 years.
The Perseus Arm holds many bright objects. You can find the Double Cluster there. It also has the Crab Nebula, which is M1.
Other objects include M36, M37, and M38. You can also see M52 and M103. Our own Solar System is near this arm. We live in the Orion–Cygnus Arm. Some think our arm is a branch of the Perseus Arm.
The Milky Way is a massive barred spiral galaxy. This means it has a central bar-shaped structure. Two major arms curve out from the ends of this bar. One of these primary structures is the Perseus Arm.
It is a vital part of our galactic neighborhood. Understanding its position helps us map our place in the universe. This arm is one of the four major arms in the galaxy.
The Perseus Arm has a very specific and massive shape. It reaches a length of more than 60,000 light-years. The width of the arm is about 1,000 light-years. It follows a spiral path with a pitch angle of 9 degrees.
The arm also has a radius of approximately 10.7 kiloparsecs. This radius measures its distance from the galactic center. It sits between two smaller, minor arms. These are the Cygnus Arm and the Carina–Sagittarius Arm.
Mapping the exact distance to this arm has been a challenge. For a long time, scientists believed it was quite distant. They thought it was 13,000 light-years away from Earth. However, new research published in 2005 changed this view.
This research suggested the arm is much closer to us. Current estimates place it at 6,400 light-years from the Solar System. This discovery significantly changed our understanding of the galaxy's structure.
Two major radio astronomy projects have worked to map these structures. The first project is the Japanese VERA project. It launched its efforts in 2001. The second is the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy Survey, or BeSSeL. This survey began its work in 2010.
Together, these projects have spent about 20 years collecting data. They aim to delineate the forms of the spiral arms. They study the galaxy from Galactic longitudes 2 to 240 degrees.
These scientists use a method called trigonometric parallax. This technique helps them measure distances to specific objects. They focus on water vapor and methanol masers. Masers are found in massive star-forming regions. These bright spots act as markers in space.
By measuring these, they can trace the spiral arms more accurately. They even use carbon monoxide emission to extend these traces. This helps them see the arms in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Perseus Arm contains many famous and bright objects. One notable feature is the Double Cluster. It also contains several Messier objects. These are specific deep-sky objects identified by Charles Messier. These include the Crab Nebula, which is known as M1.
You can also find open clusters like M36, M37, and M38. Other objects in the arm include M52 and M103. These objects help astronomers study the composition of the arm.
Our own Solar System has a unique relationship with this arm. We live in a local structure called the Orion–Cygnus Arm. This arm is located inside of the Perseus Arm. There is ongoing speculation about how they are connected. Some scientists think the Orion–Cygnus Arm is a branch of the Perseus Arm. However, this idea is still unconfirmed. Studying the Perseus Arm helps us understand our own local galactic environment.
